2011 Easter CommunionChrist Church is a vibrant congregation of about 250 members located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Our members come from diverse religious backgrounds, which is reflected in our worship and music. We are an Episcopal church that explores the breadth of our liturgical tradition through our worship.

We celebrate the Eucharist at both Sunday services. The early service at 8:15 am is a quiet and contemplative, spoken service with no music, followed by breakfast. Child care and Sunday school are offered during the 8:15 am service. Fifteen minutes before the 11:00 am service we ring our bell, letting neighbors know it is time to put down the newspaper and come to church! The later service includes music led by our wonderful choir.

In addition to singing in the choir, members serve as greeters, they read scripture and lead prayers, bring bread and wine, arrange flowers, and assist with leading and preparing for worship. Children may participate as acolytes and occasionally read lessons, lead prayers and serve as greeters. While it is possible to sit quietly in the pew, everyone is encouraged to participate in worship.

We are handicap accessible through the back entrance.

If you attend regularly, you will experience variety in our worship — whether it is the use of different prayers, different genres of music or changes to the church interior. But there will never be a doubt that you are joining an Episcopal worship service. Attire is as varied as the congregation. Some dress up. Others wear jeans. All are welcome.

Some highlights of our worship throughout the year include:
  • Children's Worship & Play -- Second Sunday each month. We have a simple service geared to children at 5:00 pm, followed by a simple dinner in the Parish Hall.
  • Palm Sunday. The service begins with a procession from Eastern Market, during which we distribute palms, play musical instruments, wave banners and umbrellas and sing joyfully! Click here to see pictures from a past year.
  • The Ecumenical Easter Vigil. We join forces with four other Capitol Hill churches from four denominations to celebrate the Easter Vigil. Location of the service rotates among the participating churches.
  • On the Sunday nearest the July 4, we often celebrate a Eucharist drawn largely from the 1779 Prayer Book.
  • Christmas Eve. With the church decorated in greens and candlelight, our worship has incorporated favorite Christmas hymns and carols with Russian musical traditions provided by the St. Petersburg Men's Ensemble for the past few years.
Sermons
We value high-quality preaching at Christ Church. Our members like to read or listen to sermons when they miss church on Sunday. Lay preaching also is a valued tradition at Christ Church. You may read or listen to many recent sermons.
