Outreach

Answering God's Call In Our Community and the World

Service to our Capitol Hill community and to the world beyond is a valued part of the life of our congregation. In addition to encouraging members to engage in their own acts of service and ministry, we regularly participate in corporate ministries. Indeed, a portion of our annual budget is committed to supporting a variety of local, national and international organizations.

Among our ongoing local outreach:

Monthly Sandwich Making: preparation and distribution of bag lunches for our homeless neighbors.
Monthly Veggie Chop: chopping vegetables for our neighborhood soup kitchen.
Collecting non-perishable foods and toiletries for Progress for Christ Baptist Church (formerly Pleasant Lane Missionary Baptist Church) for weekly collection. Leave non-perishable foods and toiletries in the toy chest by the organ or in the blue collection basket as you enter or leave the parish hall.
Bishop Walker School for Boys: The school started at full capacity: Sixty-two students from Pre-K to second grade. Our volunteers help with holiday events, serve as Lunch Buddies and help with a variety of other activities. The BWS staff especially asks for help in its after-school program. Our annual outreach activities include:

Mite boxes.
In conjunction with Capitol Hill Group Ministry, we
- donate back-to-school back pack of supplies (August/September)
- provide food baskets at Thanksgiving, (November)
At our annual St. Patrick's fund raiser, we double the volume of food needed for the event, donating half to the Church of the Brethren lunch program.
Tommy's Toys: We collect toys as Christmas gifts for children of parents who are in a CAG community recovery group
We collect phone cards for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Medical Center.

We respond to specific needs of families in our neighborhood, as needed. For example, following the Eastern Market fire in 2007, we held a fund raiser featuring Sousa's mother's spaghetti sauce recipe and took up special collections, donating the money raised to assist displaced merchants.

2013 Lenten Giving - Please consider making a contribution to parishioner Megan Wilson's cycle safety project in the African country of Benin where motorcycle and scooter accidents are a leading cause of death. Our dollars will help Megan to buy helmets that will save lives. Make checks payable to CC ✝ WP with a designation to Megan's cycles. For more information, please call the church office.

Outreach Partners:

Capitol Hill Community Quilters

The Christ Church ✝ Capitol Hill Community Quilters Extraordinaire have been making quilts as part of the fundraising activities of Christ Church since 1984. Each quilt takes nine to 12 months to complete and is raffled at our annual St. Nick's Dinner and Christmas Shop in early December. Proceeds support an outreach effort selected by the Quilters.
