Christ Church
honors Eastern Market
One
of the “icons” on Capitol Hill, Eastern Market, built by the City in
1873, burned early Monday morning April 30, destroying South Hall, the place of
the market vendors. The City is committed to rebuilding the Market and
enabling the vendors to survive. This Sunday, we focus on the Market in
our Church activities.

Please pray for these vendors from South Hall at Eastern Market:

Sunday, May 6, is Market Day at our beloved Eastern Market, a day traditionally set aside as a
fundraising activity for Friendship House. Please
come to Church before going to Market Day.
During our Sunday morning worship and education, we will focus on
the Market and will devote our Adult Forum on Sunday (9:45am –
10:45am) to sharing stories and history of Eastern Market. During
the worship services at 8:15am and 11am, we will pray for the
vendors and take up a special free-will offering to support the
vendors through funds already set up by CHAMPS and the Capitol Hill
Community Foundation.
-
PLUS: Save
the Date for a June 1 fundraiser dinner to benefit the vendors and
their families. The spaghetti dinner at Christ Church will include a
vintage recipe for spaghetti sauce by an historic, “mystery”
neighbor on the Hill. Look for more information soon on the Christ
Church web site.

Eastern Market website, www.easternmarket.net, one of Washington's most important cultural
resources, is one of the few remaining vestiges of Washington's 19th
and early 20th century public market system, and the ONLY operating
historic fresh food market left in the city. The Market is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated
local landmark. South Hall was designed in the Victorian style by
Adolf Cluss.
