Lunches for the Homeless
You can be reimbursed for up to $100 of the cost. Just
provide the church office with your receipt. If you
prefer to take the entire purchase as a tax deduction or
want a receipt for the difference between the cost and
your reimbursement just provide Linda Mellgren with the
appropriate total and she will provide a donation letter
suitable for tax purposes at the end of the year.
If you have a Costco or Sam's club membership they are a
more economical way to provide the lunches than when
groceries are purchased at Safeway or Giant. Current
cost is about $125.
The list for a 100 lunches is as follows:
SODAS - 4 cases of the cheapest you can
find. There are usually a few extra cans at church so
24X4 is fine, Note when the weather is very hot bottled
water is a good option.
FRUIT - 100 pieces; bananas or
clementines have worked best. If you get apples get
small ones that aren't too firm. Many of the homeless
have teeth problems.
BREAD - 200 slices, preferably whole
wheat, which at Costco works out to 4 of the Kirkland
double-loaf packs of whole wheat (8 loaves total) or
elsewhere might be 10 normal 22-slice loaves. Check
number of slices per loaf on the package as they vary in
number by brand.
MEAT - 100 slices of cheapest luncheon
meat; at Costco that usually has been Kirkland pressed
ham
CHEESE - 100 slices of something mild,
usually Swiss or American has been the thing. Costco has
120 slice blocks that give us a bit extra in case the
meat runs out.
CHIPS - 100 small bags, which at Costco
usually has been two big flats
COOKIES - 200 to 300 of any smaller
kind or if you want to pay a bit more get 100 pre-bagged
packets (too expensive except at Costco).
Adequate supplies of Ziploc sandwich bags, napkins,
brown paper lunch bags, and mustard are at the church,
in the kitchen near the outside door, under the
stainless table. Extra supplies are in the basement in
the left hand side storage area.
You can leave things off on Saturday or on Sunday
morning. Call the Church Office (202) 547-9300 if you
need a key or someone to let you in.
Thanks for helping with this important outreach ministry |
