Mission and Strategic Goals

Now in its fourth century, Christ Church and its
parishioners renew a sense of mission and commitment to:

A.  The Mission of Christ Church:

  • The mission of Christ Church is to be a welcoming, diverse, thankful, and joyous Episcopal community of faith committed to nurturing its members and neighbors through worship and service.

 B.   Strategic Goals

  • To work and witness in Christ’s name in and beyond our parish community, and especially to aid and comfort those who are homeless, hungry, ill, or in any kind of trouble, sorrow, or need

  • To empower and enrich the lives of our members through worship, education, fellowship, evangelism, music and the inclusion of all within the life of the parish

  • To be a good neighbor and global citizen

  • To be a faithful steward of our historic property and resources, ensuring their use for the glory of God

We strive to be welcoming, nurturing and of service to those within and outside our parish. In this way, we live our faith and make it possible for CCWP to grow both in size and spirit. We believe that Christ Church should be driven by its mission, respectful of its traditions and history, and active in exploring new avenues to fulfillment and growth.

We believe that to be a welcoming church requires more than open doors, available seats in the pews, and the offer of a cheese cracker. A true spirit of welcome requires active efforts on the part of clergy and parishioners to make newcomers feel valued and to encourage them to participate, should they desire, in the programs and activities of the parish. A true welcome requires that newcomers feel invited to join us in worship regardless of race, gender, age, orientation or physical abilities. A welcoming church is hospitable not only to newcomers, but to all members and nonmembers on a continuing basis. It also values its connections to former parishioners and is open to full participation by people who live outside Capitol Hill.

A church that is nurturing is committed to growth in knowledge about the tenets and responsibilities of the Christian faith. Such a church is committed to serving those in need and to rebutting the idea that poverty, ignorance, hunger and preventable disease should simply be accepted as parts of the human condition. Such a church is committed to preserving a healthy environment and to building partnerships with others for the purpose of strengthening bonds of friendship and understanding within and beyond its own community.

A church that lives its faith understands that all it has it owes to God. Thus, the congregation is dedicated to using its gifts in service to God’s creation.
